We have arrived!  The hotel is lovely and right across the street from the Kremlin and Red Square.
The flight was uneventful <Sarah Insert - except for when Mom started preparing herself to not be able to understand anyone, so when the flight attendant asked if she wanted "peanuts or pretzels" Mom replied "I'm sorry, I don't understand">  ha ha ha.  Anyway, we happened to stand in the customs line with the newbie, but in the end our luggage still hadn't come off the plane despite us being the last ones to arrive at baggage claim. (No worries, the luggage did eventually make it).

Sarah decided it was best to power through the jet lag so we decided to walk to Red Square - get our first taste of Russia.  GUM had set up an iceskating rink in the middle of the square.  Saw the ice skaters, bonus if you can name the song playing in the background :).  We almost had to make a trip to the emergency room, since I missed a huge step but I somehow maintained my balance -- no fractures this time.

We weren't planning to visit anything today, but St. Basil's drew us in.  It's an amazing building, both inside and out.  It seemed like every inch of the walls were painted or covered with an icon - this was a bucket list thing for me (Sarah) so I'm thrilled. We did have a difficult time navigating the cathedral though, not only are the floors uneven (not fun if you're working on two hours of sleep) but we couldn't figure out which tower we were in so I'm pretty sure we saw them all twice.

After realizing we were both freezing and exhausted we ventured into GUM (an enormous mall shopping center) for tea and a sandwich.  I ordered a hot chocolate which turned out to literally be melted chocolate - brilliant Russia, why didn't I think of that!  After the sandwich and tea, Mom nearly fell asleep at the table so we decided to head back to the hotel for a quick nap before dinner.

ZZZZZZ - until later :)
